Professional & Enterprise

The packaging process

From capture to distribution

Every package moves through the same steps. Process Templates make them the tasks of every project, so the next packager works the way the last one did.

  1. CaptureSetupCapture compares a machine before and after a setup runs; ApplicationWatch records only what one application touches.
  2. CatalogImport .msi, .msp, .mst, .wse and .wsi packages into the Wise Software Repository, where their files and registry keys are compared.
  3. AuthorEdit the package in Wise for Windows Installer, the Wise Installation System or MSIX Designer, at your edition.
  4. ValidateThe Validation Wizard checks the package against Microsoft’s authoring guidelines and your own rules.
  5. TestRun it with the Test button without touching your machine, or step through an .msi install in the debugger.
  6. DistributeCheck the finished package into the repository, or publish it to a share point or distribution location.

Long imports run on the server: Software Manager queues them to the Wise Task Service, and the Wise Task Manager shows their progress.

Wise Workbench & the Wise Software Repository

Workbench runs the packaging work

Workbench is the shell that ties the suite together: projects, the tools each task opens, and the process every package follows. Behind it, the Wise Software Repository holds what your organization already packages.

Projects, tasks and process templates

Group everything belonging to one packaging effort into a project you can reopen at any time, and run each task in the tool it needs.

  • Every installed tool in one place, launched the same way each time
  • Process Templates set the tasks a package passes through
  • A To Do List of the tasks assigned to you across every project
  • Side-by-side and full-screen modes while a tool runs
  • Standard ships the eight-step Basic Package Creation Process, with no database
MetricWhat it tells you
Total measured timeThe sum of every recorded run on the project
Actual start dateWhen work first began
Elapsed timeFrom the first run’s start to the latest run’s end
% tasks completedThe share of tasks marked complete
Tasks remainingHow many tasks still need to be done

One software repository for the team

The Wise Software Repository holds the information and resources for the software your organization uses: files, directories, registry keys and merge modules, in a database every seat shares.

  • Import packages, then report on the resources they have in common
  • Find a conflict before it reaches the desktop
  • Check packages in and out, with a history of who changed what
  • Point one Software Manager seat at production, test and archive catalogs
WhereWhat it holds
Software repositoryPackages, their files, registry keys, merge modules and relationships
Share pointTemplates, component rules, prerequisites, themes and validation rules
Task queueThe imports and jobs the Wise Task Service runs on the server
Workbench databaseProjects, process templates, tools, users and groups

Wise SharePoint

Share templates, component rules, prerequisites, installation themes and validation rules between development teams.

Repository Manager

Create share points and the databases behind them: provision schemas, apply migrations and register the share point everyone works from.

Package relationships

Record the application groups a package belongs to and the order related packages install in, with metadata such as its owner and license.

Security Setup

Define groups, assign users to them, and control which parts of Workbench each group may see and change. Enterprise.

Tool Setup

Publish the tool catalog every seat sees, adding, editing and removing the tools that appear in Workbench. Enterprise.

Metrics & reports

Report on the time recorded against projects and tasks, so the next estimate starts from what actually happened.

Server-side import queue

Hand long-running imports to the Wise Task Service, so they run on the server and leave the packager’s machine free.

SOE Snapshot

Record a standard operating environment, so captures taken against it leave out everything the baseline already provides. Enterprise.

Visual MSIDiff

Compare two packages, or a transform against its base .msi, and see which tables, files and settings differ. Enterprise.

Find your fit

Choose the package format

Two authoring tools build the classic installer formats, and MSIX Designer adds the modern one. For managed, enterprise rollouts lean toward .msi; for a fully custom installer you hand over and run, lean toward WiseScript.

Flexible Distribution
DistributePublish a finished package to the Wise Software Repository, a share point or a distribution location, in one step from the tool that built it.✓––

WiseUpdate™The WiseUpdate client, installed on the destination PC, routinely scans the Web for updates and automatically downloads and installs new files.✓✓–
SmartPatch™Create patch installations containing only the differences between two versions of your software, and identify the changes that would make a patch unsafe before you ship it.✓––
Wise Digital SignaturesDigitally sign an .MSI, an .EXE wrapper, or an .MSI wrapped with external CAB files, ensuring the integrity of every package.✓✓✓
Release ManagementCreate multiple releases — such as full, evaluation and demo versions — from a single project file, reducing labor and costs.✓✓–
Media OptionsBuild for whatever the package ships on, from a single compressed file to external cabinets and spanned, multi-part media.✓✓✓
Command Line CompileBuild any project from a script or a build server without opening the IDE, so packaging joins your existing automated build.✓✓–
